Cyclists raise over £5,000 for Prince Philip Chemotherapy Day Unit

A group of friends have taken on an epic challenge in memory of a dear friend and colleague – they’ve cycled the length of Wales, from north to south.

The cyclists rode from Bangor to Loughor, near Llanelli, to raise money for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital, where friend and colleague Wayne Evans was treated.

The WE N2S (Wayne Evans North to South) cycle group raised a huge £5,036 for the unit, taking in towns across the country, including Aberystwyth and Burry Port.

Wayne was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in August 2022, and it meant he couldn’t complete Ironman Wales that September. Despite an incredibly challenging time, he was determined to continue pursuing his passion for triathlon and went on to complete Swansea and Llanelli Triathlon as part of a team where he ran or walked the 5k, while raising money.

Inspired by their friend’s strength, organiser Sarah Mountfield and the rest of the cyclists first took on their own cycle challenge in August 2023, where they rode from north to south Wales. In doing so, they raised over £3,000 for Prince Philip Hospital’s Chemotherapy Unit and decided to do it again in August 2024, where they raised even more money.

Sarah said the 2025 cycle ride – which took place over August bank holiday – was “fun, challenging and rewarding” and they were pleased to exceed their goal amount of £5,000 this year.

She explained: “Following the last two years’ successful rides, we decided to take on the challenge again to raise money for the Chemotherapy Unit, raising a staggering £5,036 in memory of our dear friend Wayne.”

“It was a fitting tribute to Wayne, a wonderful man who continues to inspire many,” she added. “The route is incredibly challenging, but we supported each other and got through it.”

Kath Watkins, Senior Sister, said: “On behalf of the staff and patients at the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital, I would like to thank team WE N2S for their remarkable cycle challenge and fantastic donation of over £5,000.”
