Thanks to generous donations, Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, has been able to fund a British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) course for Occupational Therapist Sarah Cadell.

The BACPR supports health professionals in the development, delivery and assessment of evidence-based, individualised programmes of prevention and rehabilitation. These support both individuals with established Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and those with significant CVD risk factors.

Sarah said: “I’m incredibly grateful that charitable funds allowed me to take part in the BACPR course.

This training has increased my knowledge of cardiac conditions and the type of exercise that would promote recovery and maintenance post cardiac event. I am now able to use my skills more effectively to support nurses with delivering patient care.

“This qualification has enabled me to take an active role in delivering cardiac rehab classes. I have been able to raise awareness of occupational therapy, generate referrals and extend the reach and impact of occupational therapy services to Pembrokeshire residents.

“Since attending the course, I have also given a presentation about the main points that were relevant to my Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) colleagues working within Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR), as the knowledge I gained is transferable across both specialities. We are looking to incorporate some of the learning with cardiac patients within our PR courses.”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
