Intrepid fundraiser to climb to Mount Everest Base Camp for local NHS

Leigh Hughes will be taking on a 12-day epic challenge in April 2025 by climbing up to Mount Everest Base Camp to raise funds for the Hywel Dda Diabetic Service.

Leigh, who is originally from Kidwelly and now resides in Cardiff, will be joined by a group of friends on the trek and aims to raise in excess of £20,000 for a variety of charitable organisations.

The group will ascend from Kathmandu, which sits at around 2,860 metres above sea level, to the heights of Everest Base Camp, standing at 5,364 metres, a vertical gain of over 1,500 metres.

Leigh said: “My brother and two nieces have been looked after and monitored by the Hywel Dda Diabetic Service since they were very young, having developed Type 1 diabetes.

“The treatment of diabetes has developed significantly; however, there is still a long way to go, and any donations will go towards the continued work of the Diabetic Unit in Carmarthen.”

Nicola Llewellyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “We’d like to say a massive thank you to Leigh for choosing to raise funds for the Diabetic Unit. We look forward to supporting you on your journey!

“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
