Nigel Powell, a carpenter from Burry Port, held a successful charity golf day and raised £10,373 for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Glangwili Hospital.
Nigel has organised charity golf days for 18 years and this year's event in aid of the unit took place on Friday 15th May at Ashburnham Golf Club, where he’s a member.
Speaking about why he decided to raise money for the unit, Nigel said: “My eldest boy was born premature and spent weeks in the unit. My daughter also spent time there after contracting Strep B. My grandson, who turned one on 1st June, was also born premature and spent a few weeks in SCBU.
“The fundraiser was amazing, everyone enjoyed it. The golf was great and competitive. We also had evening entertainment, and it went on late into the night.
“My goal was to raise between £9,000 and £10,000, and we raised a huge £10,050. I am overwhelmed with the support and the amount raised.
“I’m grateful to Ashburnham Golf Club, all the businesses that sponsored the event, my family and friends, the golfers, my wife for all her support, Stephen Aspin, Shane Davies and my daughter-in-law for helping with the registration and taking money.”
Kelly Brown, Neonatal Outreach Leader, said: “We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your incredible generosity in raising money for the Special Care Baby Unit at Glangwili General Hospital.
“We are truly grateful that you chose to support our unit, your kindness will make a meaningful difference to the babies and families we care for. Fundraising efforts like yours are helping us improve the quality of care and the overall experience for those who need our support during such a critical time.”
Claire Rumble, Fundraising Officer, said: “What an incredible amount! We’d like to say a massive thank you to Nigel for organising a golf day for such a wonderful cause.
“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
