David Young organised a fundraising event in Whitland and raised funds to purchase five smart TVs and mirrors for head and neck cancer patients on Merlin Ward at Glangwili Hospital.

David, from Carmarthen, held the event at South Caravan Park in Tavernspite as a token of his gratitude for all the support and care he received from the staff on Merlin Ward.

David said: “I was suddenly diagnosed with throat cancer in April 2024. After what I thought would be a routine appointment with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team, I was rushed to theatre for an emergency tracheostomy. I was then admitted to Merlin Ward for my recovery.

“I spent about 4-5 weeks on the ward. Although it was all very frightening and scary, the staff were so supportive, friendly and kind. Every member of staff was so accommodating, from the cleaning staff to the ward sister. I will be forever grateful for the way they supported not just me, but my wife also. They truly went above and beyond.”

Speaking about the fundraising event, David added: “A fun night was had by all, with entertainment, a raffle and an auction. I would like to give a big thank you to Charles and Sophie James who allowed us to hold this event. I would also like to thank KT, Jess, Amy, Lucy and all the bar staff. Without their time, effort and support, the night wouldn’t have been the success that it was.”

Claire Rumble, Fundraising Officer, said: “We are incredibly grateful to David for organising such a thoughtful fundraiser following his experience.

“The generous charitable donations we receive don’t replace NHS funding. Instead, they are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure, such as more welcoming surroundings for patients, families and staff, andthe latest equipment.”
