Our Wish Fund campaign creates magical memories for children and young people supported by the paediatric palliative care team and their families. We spoke to Cai (pictured) and his mum Vicki about why the Wish Fund means so much to them.
Q: How has the Wish Fund made a difference for you?
Cai: The Wish Fund granted me a day out to the Botanical Gardens and the Bird of Prey centre. I enjoyed it because it was so fun and very open access. It was just nice to have everyone doing stuff together.
Vicki: The Wish Fund has funded a few days out for us, it funded the trip to the Botanic Gardens and also a trip to see Elf live, and Cai has made presents in craft workshops.
The days out were brilliant, really good for the family because my sister and niece came as well, which was really lovely. You don’t get to do things like that very often!
Q: Was it good to meet up with other families?
Cai: It’s fun to see other people and other families. It benefits people by enabling them to forge new friendships.
Vicki: It was really lovely to be able to meet up with other people who are in similar situations and to be able to do things which are accessible for everybody and not just one child or the other.
Q: Why do you think the Wish Fund is so important?
Vicki: Because people don’t normally get these opportunities. Families have got enough financial stresses day-to-day as it is. Most of the time we can’t afford to pay for family days out which is when you make such special memories. And to have support on hand from the paediatric palliative care team means families can take part in activities which they may have thought weren’t possible.
Cai: The Wish Fund is so important because it helps people in the Hywel Dda area to do stuff they normally wouldn’t be able to. It’s just great for people who need some support to live their life a bit better.
Q: What’s your message to someone who is thinking of supporting the Wish Fund?
Cai: I would recommend it as they help so many different families, and what they’re doing is really just amazing! They are helping families do activities that by normal means would be really difficult for them to do. It would be just amazing if they could donate and raise awareness of this fantastic charity.
Vicki: My message is just do it! It really helps people and it’s greatly appreciated. It’s also nice to see the benefits and how it has helped the families, it’s a lovely feeling!
