Staff from the Glangwili Intensive Care Unit and family members and friends of Jane Bacon are abseiling 100 meters down the side of the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth in her memory.

Jane had been battling cancer since 2021 and became unwell during a trip away with her family. Jane was admitted to Glangwili Hospital and sadly passed away due to sepsis in September 2022.

The abseil will take place on 31st August 2024 in an effort to raise funds the new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Glangwili Hospital.

Amanda Stephens, Sister at Glangwili ICU and cousin to Jane, said: “In August of 2022, my aunties and cousins came for their annual Welsh holiday. They travelled from Brighton and Gosport in England but unbeknown to us, this would be Jane's last time.

“My lovely cousin Jane became unwell during her holiday and was taken to Glangwili Hospital via ambulance where she was admitted. Within a few weeks, Jane had deteriorated further and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, my place of work. Jane was battling cancer and despite having had surgery, she succumbed to sepsis and passed away in September 2022.

“The care and support we had as a family from my colleagues and friends was phenomenal. The Intensive Care Unit became our home in the few days Jane was there. We will be eternally grateful for all the hard work and effort made by my colleagues to ensure Jane was comfortable and her passing was peaceful and dignified.

“Twelve of us are taking part in the abseil. My aunt, Jane's mum, who is 73, is taking part alongside her other daughter, Lizzie, and her granddaughter, Phoebe. Three generations completing an amazing challenge. And some of us, myself included, are particularly scared of heights!”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “We’d like to say a huge good luck to everyone taking part in the abseil in memory of Jane.

“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
