Work has officially begun on an ambitious new project to transform the front garden area of Amman Valley Hospital into a dementia‑friendly, therapeutic outdoor space designed to support patient rehabilitation, staff wellbeing, and community engagement.
The Wellness and Patient Focus Garden Scheme will create sensory pathways, accessible seating areas, and a calm natural environment that promotes healing and enhances patients’ experiences while supporting the hospital’s commitment to sustainable and biodiverse green spaces.
The project represents a total investment of nearly £140,000, with Amman Valley Hospital League of Friends providing £114,533, and Hywel Dda Health Charities - the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board - contributing the remaining £25,000.
The garden is set to open in summer 2026, and will be a part of the celebrations to mark the 90th anniversary of Amman Valley Hospital.
Catherine Rogerson, Chair of Amman Valley Hospital League of Friends, said: “Supporting the wellbeing of patients, families, and staff has always been at the heart of what we do, and we are incredibly proud to be the major funder of this transformative garden.
“For 90 years, Amman Valley Hospital has been a cornerstone of our community, and this new therapeutic space will enhance the environment for everyone who uses it. We are thrilled to see work beginning and look forward to the official opening this summer.”
Iona Evans, Head of Nursing - Carmarthenshire System at Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “We are grateful to the Amman Valley Hospital League of Friends for their incredible generosity and for their continued commitment to improving care for local people.
“The project will create meaningful benefits for patients, staff, and the wider community. Therapeutic outdoor spaces play a vital role in recovery and mental wellbeing, and this new garden will offer people a calm, accessible and restorative environment. We can’t wait to see the benefits it will bring.”
